US 3 sheet silent stone litho original theatrical movie poster for "Derby Day" (1923), a classic silent short film from Hal Roach’s popular "Our Gang" Comedies series (later famously known as The Little Rascals).
Distributed by Pathé Exchange, the illustration at the top depicts members of the gang—Jack Davis, Mary Kornman, and Jackie Condon—running a chaotic roadside stall selling "Hot Dogs" and "Soda Pop" for 5¢.
Plot Overview
In this 20-minute silent short, the kids initially set up their concessions business directly across the street from a major horse racing track. They cross paths with Mary, a wealthy girl whose father owns one of the competitive racehorses. Thanks to her connection, the entire gang sneaks into the racetrack for free to watch the event unfold. Inspired by the high-stakes horse racing action, they abandon their food stand and decide to engineer their own neighborhood derby back home.
The homemade race turns into a chaotic spectacle as they construct a makeshift junior track, set up functional betting windows, and attempt to ride an eccentric assortment of "noble steeds"—including a mule, a cow, a goat, a tricycle, and pet dogs pulling wagons. |
